This is my 155 bow Dempsey community tank. I am looking for an alternative to my current heating setup. As you can see in the picture I have two titanium heaters in the center of the tank. The problem with two heaters is that they are not synchronized and one heater ends up doing all the work. I would love to move the heater down into the wet/dry but finding a small enough device that will heat this tank has been difficult. I would also entertain using an inline heating system if I can find one that will handle 155g. Any ideas?

Nice tank man, Cant help you on the heater idea...maybe get 3-4 smaller submersible heaters in the wet/dry and then you wont see them either. but then you need 2 more outlets. You should easily be able to get the 2 heaters you have sychronized if they were not right next to eachother maybe put them on opposite sides of the tank.

Very nice tank! I usually run 2 heaters on my tanks as well as at least 2 filters. I normally put them on either ends of the tank so that the filters are flowing past the heaters. Both heaters cycle on and off and the filters help disperse the warm water throughout the tank.

After hearing all the concepts of one heater vs. two… I use one heater whenever possible… I won’t rehash the pros and cons to each here…

I have a 250 W heater in my 125 gal tank and the temp stays very consistent. And that’s with my fiancé turning down the air conditioning every time I turn my back… She would keep the house at 60* if I let her get away with it…

So are you saying there isn’t enough room for a standard sized 250~300 W heater in your sump? Not even on an angle? Looking at the pic it seems one should fit, but that could just be an optical illusion.

…and to echo Dan… That is one beautiful tank you have there…

Like others have said I would either get rid of one or move them to the sides. being right beside the other one heating up will turn off the other and your heaters will keep going on and off which will make it really hard to synchronize. I would just take one out. Nice tank I love bow fronts.

The sump is all sealed up with the exception of the pumping bay so they don't offer up as much space to place peripherals as they would lead you to believe.

I see where you’re going Dan that one is sitting right next to that Magnum intake. I'm not sure which one has been doing all the work. I can see at the control unit under the tank the same one is always on. Didn't bother to trace it out.

I thank you all for the great feedback. I had them in the sump at one point but with that humongous Eheim 1260 taking up so much space, they were partially sticking out of the water. I think I will go with the majority here and separate them to the ends of the tank. I would like to get them out of there altogether but I guess I'll wait till they can make them smaller and stronger.

I have pretty much the identical sump on one of my 75 gallon tanks and the titanium heaters fit in there just fine, laying down. I never had an issue with it in there until one day I drained the sump and forgot to unplug the heater. Now I am using a Rena Smartfilter on almost all my tanks, and I must say I will never buy another filter besides Rena. These things are magnificant!

On a side note, I do have a 75 gallon tank going that does have two smaller heaters, one on either end as suggested. I think in the long run however, using 2 heaters instead of one will draw more electricity and cost you more each month.

Best of luck with this!
