He/She is a youngster, but definitely has gold-colored fins. I'll try to get a picture, but this guy just looks gold. I'm relatively new to JD's, but the other smaller one I got had a "taupe" color to the body/fins. He's just now getting his blue dots. New JD definitely has a gold tint to him - not that brown/taupe color.

Or, could it just be too soon to tell? He's little...maybe 1.5-2" tops. Too soon to tell?

It should be very obvious if it's a gold. Check the pic at the top of the page. Even when young, the gold should look similar to the one there and very different to a regular JD.

Juvis are often "washed out" expecially when they are new to a set up. Give them some time to settle in and feed them a strong diet. You should expect them to darken up soon.

Unless you bought it as a Gold Dempsey it will not turn out to be a Gold...

He doesn't look like the one at the top of the page. I was hoping that they developed that pink or washed out look as they matured.

Oh well...he's cute as can be anyway - even if he is just "regular"! I bought him at Petsmart, and they don't know their JD's from Oscars anyway. I asked if he was gold, and the girl said "I don't know - they just send them to us".

BTW Toby - looks like we're "neighbors"...I'm in Charlotte too!

Thanks everyone...was hoping I had a goldie, but I love the blues too. It's what attracted me to the JD's in the first place! Well, that and the fact that I rescued THREE from a TWELVE GALLON tank!!!!! I love their bully personalities too. Gotta love a fish with attitude!

That's awesome! By the way... if you want a Gold Dempsey I have wigglers now... so I'll have juvis in about 4~5 months...

Or if your in more of a hurry than that Frank n Pegs on South Blvd and Critterville on 521 in Lancaster have young adult male Golds. All are good quality, I can vouch for them personally (although I did not breed them).

While we’re at it, there is a Charlotte Fish Club if you are interested. Next weekend is a Swat Meet in Spartanburg. I won’t be attending myself. I’ll be working on my fish room

Welcome to the group!

Oh I would LOVE a gold one (or two...you know how THAT goes)! And, I can certainly wait 4-5 months because I will likely be moving and getting a bigger and better tank for the JD's after moving. So your timing is perfect, actually!

I love Frank & Pegs...great shop. Wish they were closer to me, though.

WOW...thanks for the info about the club. I can't go next weekend either.... How often do they meet? I will definitely check out that link, and thanks!

OK - this one is not a JD.

This one is in the Amphilophus group, I am not an expert on the so I can't tell you if it is a citrinellus (Midas cichlid) or labiatus (Red Devil), or a hybrid of these two which has become quite common in the aquarium trade, but it certainly is not a JD.

Sorry.

Patrick

He LOOKS like my other JD's...especially the fins and I can see faint blue speckles developing on his top fin. Let me try to get better pictures - he HAS to be a JD!!!!!

They had Red Devils at the time, and this fish did NOT look like those.

Why do you guys think he's NOT a JD????

Toby...keep feeding those wigglers, cuz I obviously want and NEEEEEEEED a gold JD!!!

I'm going to try for some better pics...I swear, he was in the JD tank and he does look like my others except for the color. But, I'm new to JD's, so what do I know?!?!?!?!

UH OH...after doing a little research, I'm afraid you guys are right. This fish looks like a dead ringer for Midas Cichlid juvie picture I found.

Sadly, I'll have to return him. Long term, he won't be a good tankmate for my JD's.

Oh well...guess I'll just have to wait for Toby's wigglers!

THANK YOU ALL SOOOOOOO MUCH. As much as I've grown fond of the little guy, my JD's were here first and I ADORE them!

Toby...can you feed some steriods to your wigglers so they'll grow faster?!?!?!?!

I'll make you a deal...

You spend the next 2 months gathering up what you need to raise a handful of little baby Dempseys and as soon as they are big enough to eat typical foods I’ll give you a handful of them to raise. A cycled 20 gallon tank with an appropriate filter/heater, etc should be fine. Golds are as hardy as regular JDs so nothing special is needed (such as UV lights if they were Blues).

You’ll also be the first person I’ve given/sold Gold Dempseys to that I bred myself.

But I must put one stipulation on this… You cannot breed them back to each other to make babies. Yes they will be Gold babies, But they will be second generation brother x sister inbred and will be lower quality. I would hate for these lower quality fish to get into the trade and earn Gold Dempseys a poor reputation of being low quality fish. This low quality inbreeding is what (I believe) has put our Blue Dempseys in a lower quality situation now. So let’s learn from that mistake and not inbred high quality fish to later be stuck with low quality fish…

Sorry for the speech… but you’ve got two months… starting… NOW!

AWESOME!!! I just happen to have a 20 Long that fits the bill!

Not to worry...I have zero interest in breeding JD's or anything else. I slipped along the molly breeding slope and it quickly overtook all my tanks! So, I rehomed them to someone that wanted to only breed livebearers and I got back to the business of just enjoying my fish!

While I will be sad to return this little guy, a gal has to have her priorities straight! Now I have a great motivation to get that 20L cleaned and back in business.

DEAL, and thanks!

I second those emotions...truly honored, and I promise - I won't let you down, Toby!

Sadly, I did return the little mystery fish today. Funny how attached I had gotten to the little imposter. They thought he was a Red Devil. Could be the hybrid Midas/Red Devil you guys were talking about too. But, they had a "cichlid rescuer" that was going to take him along with 2 others they had in the back. So, I know he's going to a good home..just wish I knew WHAT he was!

Anyway, I am VERY honored and excited about the lil gold JD's!!! I think my other JD's are happy to have their tank back to themselves as well. Still I miss the gold impersonator...he would actually swim to GREET me - unlike my skittish JD's...silly fish!

Gotta love 'em, though. I'm nuts about them...or just nuts in general! (And no, that's not open for discussion...! )
